Sadly they do tend to go downhill very quickly when they do get ill, despite our best efforts. To reassure you, it is unlikely to be bird flu. Symptoms are supposed to include swelling of the face and comb, it acts very quickly and spreads very quickly through the flock. If you are at all concerned, it is worth having the flu vaccine yourself - when there was a real risk of bird flu the other year, the health protection agency did recommend that poultry handlers be vaccinated with the normal flu vaccine to prevent the virus mutating if exposed to the bird flu strain. Hens do seem strangely fragile - at least to me, who's more used to dogs and cats and being able to 'rescue'' animals which have seemed at deaths door.
