at do you put in the nest box in the classic?

 

I put wood shavings but they go straight through the silly massive drain hole!!!

I tried hay and they threw it everywhere....

 

interested in what others do...

 

need to encourage these ladies to lay!

Not sure if its the same hole as the cube but I put duck tape over the hole and use shavings!

We put newspaper down to line the nest box, then fill it with straw/wood shavings. This makes it easier to clean out as we just wrap up the newspaper around the soiled bedding, and the bedding doesn't fall through the draining whole! Hope this helps

I put a thin flexible chopping board over the gap - it stops the shaving falling out the gap and also helps to scoop out old shavings

Cut up a plastic milk bottle so it covers the hole, and add a couple of screws to the milk bottle piece to weigh it down, and then put the shavings on top. It works a treat in my cube with my girls

I was always worried about whether rats/mice could get into the classic through the nest box hole. We scrunch up a small piece of chicken wire and push it into the hole so that most of it's outside underneath the nestbox, preventing entrance by intruders. I shape it in the nest box so there are no sharp pieces sticking upwards - in fact it literally covers the hole. I cover it with a big pile of easychick bedding which is held in by the chicken wire and is nice and absorbent.
