Raina
Please remember to wash your cat or dogs feet after they have been outside. Road grit contains antifreeze, a friends dog died from liver failure after licking her feet when she was walked over gritted areas.
Egluntyne
Not sure that this is true tbh. It is plain old rock salt that is used where I live. Some of the concoctions that domestic users can buy may contain other substances.
abwsco
Rock salt here as well.
angeluk69
Salt is just as bad as antifreeze, you must make sure you rinse your dogs feet after walking as when the dogs lick their feet when grooming they ingest the salt and as we all know too much salt is not good for anyone and can be fatal for dogs. Raina
Sorry but it's just what I read, I doubt she would lie about how her dog died.
Chucky Mama
Rock salt doesn't contain anti freeze. It can make dog's paws sore and irritated it is not good for them to lick off so it is a good idea to wash it off when they come in. You can add a protective layer by using something called paw wax Anti freeze is lethal so should be kept well away from dogs and cats. Chucky Mama
I see what you mean Raina Rock salt/grit itself does not contain anti freeze but other chemicals that are ending up on the roads during the cold spell can result in poisoning. You are right that it is sensible to clean paws when dogs come in after walking near treated roads.
Mercedes55
I had no idea about that. We used some stuff on our patio in the back garden and both our dogs are in and out of there all day
The Dogmother
Glad that you brought this up; they have gritted the paths in our park for the first time in 20 years so I am avoiding them with the dogs. Apart from the licking problem, it can really irritate their paws too. Road grit/salt contains rock salt and grit.
