savena5630
I have five pekin bantams (girls), but I think one of them thinks she is a cockerel, she even (nearly) crows, she does it all the time! Anyone had any similar experiences?
Egghead68
I have one Pekin. She is extremely noisy and bossy and rules the roost over the full-size chickens (and the humans). She did start crowing like a cockerel one day but it was because she was ill (her gizzard was impacted and I think this was pressing on her ovaries). If this is a new thing for your bird you might want to give her a health check. Edited February 22, 2013 by Guest
mimi5
I have 7 pekin girls and they are loud, bossy madams!!!! Milly is the worst and screams her head off regularly, she has a daughter, Penny who has developed the same trait!!!! It can be about anything really........laying an egg, something "scary", wanting the nestbox to themselves or let us out!!!!! It's down to their personalities mostly!!! Yes, I did have a girl have a go at crowing but thankfully who ever it was stopped after a couple of days.......just as well with Mr Morris crowing we definitely don't need anyone else!!!!!!! The Dogmother
All the pekin hens I've ever had have been gobby madams, one sounds like a seagull screeching, and I once had one which sort of crowed. I think it's fair to say they are a vocal breed
Egluntyne
My Pekins are the noisiest of all the hens I have ever had. One in particular has a very big gob.
The Dogmother
The Boy refers to them as 'Pat Butcher with feathers'

jeshen
Same here - I have 4 noisy pekin girls. One starts and the others tend to join in - they can make more noise than pekin cockerel, Mr Darcy, who has quite a tuneful crow I think.. Betty, my owlbeard, on the other hand, is a sweet-natured little character, definitely bottom of the pile except when she's chasing blackbirds! Pleased to hear you have another boy, Mimi! Great name! Does he crow for England or isn't he too bad?
mimi5
Pleased to hear you have another boy, Mimi! Great name! Does he crow for England or isn't he toobad? Wel,l he's not too bad during the day.....but does start early!! I'm hoping his crow will sort it's self out......he's a bit like a teenage boy who's voice is breaking.....high ptiched one minute, then deeper the next!! The high pitched crows are a bit peircing!! Oh but he doesn't sound like my Monty who had a very pleasant crow, can you tell I still miss him Will try and post a pic of him with his "harem" Think he's got his work cut out for him!!! jeshen
Oooh, yes, would love to see some pics! Hadn't thought of cockerels' voices breaking!!! Maybe my Mr D will end up with a deep bass crow!! I bet you do miss Mr Monty. We can't help getting attached to them can we, especially if they're such lovely characters.
