My house was built circa 1985 & is semi. I have lovely neighbours; I have always been able to smell what they are having for dinner as the smell wafts into the 'cupboard under the stairs'. Recently though, I have been able to smell cigarettes on my side (we don't smoke, but one of the neighbours does). Does anyone know why this may be? I don't think that they are getting heavier smokers, but what if something structurally is happening to the houses? I thought that a rat might have nibbled a hole from their side to mine, but my cats would have alerted me to that scenario I think. Any ideas?!

Our house is rather old, like 1700s, but has a newer extension that must be about 10 years old. You can smell next door's cooking if you go upstairs in the extension. I guess newer building techniques use thinner materials and allow more airflow?

 

I'll watch with interest to see what people suggest. We are vegetarian and I really don't appreciate the smell of cooking meat in our house! (I love that smilie and the fact it is called 'vom'!)

They've been neighbours for nearly 10 years. It's most odd! I don't know whether to mention it to them in a funny kind of way....but am just wondering, why now?!

Maybe broach it by asking if they have noticed any smells coming from your side? I remember when my dad redid our living room floor. He sprayed a load of woodworm treatment which went through to next door. Their house was built in the 50s I think.

Great idea! Asking if they have noticed anything from your side would be a really good starting point and lead nicely into you mentioning their smells !

I didn't raise the subject with them yesterday because the smell had gone during the daytime; however they did mention that their toilet had a cracked cistern & there was something wrong with the inlet pipe that they had fixed on Thursday. Their bathroom & specifically the toilet, is against my side of the house so I wonder if the answer is there? My daughter's friend was around last night when the smell came back & she actually asked who had been smoking in my bathroom! I am going to have to speak to them aren't I?

Nothing worse than the smell of smoke in your house if you are a non smoker.
