Will 3 chickens get cold in a cube? Im looking to get some chickens around june july time and want to start off with 3 i like the look of the cube as they will have loads of room to roam withst we are at work all day ( dont want to let them roam free untill im certain we wont get foxes in the garden as we live near farm land ) I dont want them to get cold in such a roamy house will they be ok plus then if i want more which im sure i will i have the space for them.

 

Also would love advice on which is better the classic or cube ???

My first lot were three and we got a cube. We now have 4 in a cube. I don't think they get cold but we are softies and they have the extreme temperature jacket and a snuggle safe for super ice. I think we are so cautious as we live on an exposed hill and I actually reckon we go totally overboard!

 

I would go cube, but I would say that I wish I had gone straight for a WIR, and if you are doing this then the classic would be fine as they all sleep in a bunch. I would also say that get more to start with as introductions are horrible in a small space and you will want more.

 

So, in summary, cube, more chickens and a WIR!

Hi, we have 4 in a cube with a 4m run, they must be warm enough as our chooks (not all from the original bunch) have never stopped laying, even through winter. We did have an eglu go but couldnt get on with it being so low. Love our cube but sadly having to rehome that and our chooks hence the post in the for sale bit

I'd go with the Cube too.

If you get 3 birds this year, you should have plenty of eggs, but when they get older and start to lay less, it would be good to have house room for 3 more, (and possibly 3 more after that). I have tried to stagger the ages of the hens I have, to balance out the number of good egg layers : free loaders!

 

I think it is possible to take up some of the room in the Cube over winter, if you are worried about it being understocked and getting cold. I think my mother used a few bales of the vacuum packed straw you can get from pet shops - which should be fine if they don't try to eat the plastic off.

I have 3 bantams in a cube and they are very happy. Lots of space and they cuddle up together in the winter- which seems to be a permanent state at the moment...

Thanks guys your comments have been great and very much appricieated from a chicken virgin ! busy doing much chicken reaserch while this snow is hanging about but cant wait to get cracking ! ( sorry couldnt resist) cube it is cant wait !

OOH its hard love the yellow but its a toss up between yellow orange pink or purple its a good job i have time to decide !

If you want them to sleep in (and not wake the neighbours by shouting to get out from first light) then go for the darker colours. Having said that, I rather like the yellow one. It's a new colour and wasn't available when I got my green and my blue one. I think my favourite is purple though and that's the colour I'd go for now - but I'm not buying any more!

I like purple It seems to weather well too, my oldest is over 5 years old now.
