auntielizzie
I am going to be having a slab base made for my coop and run soon. I want to put a deep layer of hardwood chips in it, but I'm not sure where to get it in bulk. I'm sure I've seen some omleteers have bulk orders delivered so I'm wondering if anyone knows where I might get some from in the Hertfordshire area (I live in Welwyn Garden City). Also, how much would I expect to pay. I'm guessing (even if I could get hold of bags of hardwood chip locally - which I can't) that buying in bulk would work out cheaper than getting lots of bags. Thanks for any info.
counturchickens
Hi, Have a look for local tree surgeons, and give them a call. They might do you a price for a load. We've done this before and was much cheaper.
merlina
Others have found them at B&Q, although stocks and supplies seem to be intermittent. I've also seen them on ebay quite regularly in various sizes
Lavenders_Blue
I use a local tree surgeon who delivers me a tipper truck load for free. He's only too pleased to get rid of it!
LottyJ1
I pay £20 for 1T of hardwood chip from our local tree surgeon.

Chicken deficient
We get ours free from the tree surgeon too. Ask for 'green wood chip' and explain what it is for, so that they don't give you a batch with yew or anything toxic in it. The last lot we had was fantastic - really chunky nice chips! You do need to spread it out as soon as you get it though, being green, otherwise it will heat up and start going funny very quickly.
