Purplemaniacs
We have had eggs, incubator and brooder in school for just over a week, the 10 eggs were supposed to hatch on Wednesday but nothing happened until Friday when 5 hatched. One just as playtime was about to start so the Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage children got to see a chick hatch , it was wonderful. I also managed to record it on the school ipad. One was still trying to hatch on Tuesday evening so the teacher (also chicken mad ) helped it out, I know but at times you have to do something to give it a chance. It seemed very weak yesterday but gaining in strength but when I went into school this morning just before lunch it had just died. So I had to sort it out. It was very sad, one of the teachers was in tears. So over the last few days we have seen the wonders of hatching and the sadness of one not making it. We ended up with 7 chicks, 2 eggs did not hatch. It has been a wonderful experience for the children but I was amazed at the cost of it. Goosey Lucy
We had a similar experience, started with 24 eggs, 3 were clear when I candled them, 15/21 hatched but only 12 made it to a week old. 1 more died at home so we had 11/21 eggs. I know what you mean about the cost!
Twirly Chick
Yes we too had an incubator at school and sadly only 3 out of 10 eggs hatched I agree it was a wonderful experience for the children but again quite costly and the children were a little sad not to see more of them hatch - unfortunately sometimes nature has her own ideas
