good_egg
....I'm quite confused by this... It is the third time I have found an egg in the run. The first one was at the start of June, then about a week later and now there was an egg right at the run door. It seemed to have been kicked about a bit cos it was quite dirty... It looks like a Dotty egg but was bigger than she usually lays... I'm a bit confused as the stress and effort that seems to go into laying an egg for all of mine doesn't seem like something that would take them by surprise... Could it be the maran starting but not laying dark brown eggs - she doesn't seem completely maran like so the colour is feasible - but she does follow the others into the nest box to observe so should know what happens... Plus the times seem quite spread out in terms of weeks... Wondering if they just decide they are comfy and can't be bothered going to the nest box - bit far fetched though!! V confused! Mrs_B
Hmmm it's odd and is frustrating when you find an egg somewhere other than the nest box, especially in the run - I can't advise on the colour of the eggs side of things, but only from my own experience! Our Amber has laid in the run a few times before but she's only done this when she's either going to lay a softie or she's a bit under the weather, and so she's changed from her normal routine. I'm not sure if this helps you at all - but maybe one of your girls was feeling different than normal and didn't opt to go in the nest box that day? x
Lavenders_Blue
I've had three of these recently, and have had this happen occasionally in the past too. I have no idea why it happens, but as long as all the hens look happy and healthy, I don't tend to worry about it too much.
Chicken deficient
I've had a few and assumed it was probably due to a personality clash in the nest box and someone being turfed out when she was busting. Also one of my hens doesn't like to miss out on anything - she doesn't just go into the nest box, lay an egg and they come back out again. Instead, she goes in and out and in and out repeatedly and I think she miss-judges it sometimes.
Purplemaniacs
My bantams sometimes lay in the run, Wyandottes and Welsummers. In the last week I have also noticed that one of the Wyandottes who usually lays cream eggs has started to lay pure white ones. Not sure why nothing has changed other than the weather Chrissie
good_egg
We are away this week, but apparently someone has done it again! Very strange. But not as strange as colour changing eggs! Hmmmm
AlisonH
My 2 chooks have religiously laid in the coop ever since they started laying. Last week I too found an egg in the run - never happened before - very strange. Am sure my 2 collude to think - what can we worry her with next?!
