knitting socks - what fun!

Recommended Posts

I am having such fun knitting socks which tells you a lot about my aspirations. It is the perfect knitting for me, small, quick projects that involve no seam sewing. No sewing at all really. I buy sock yarn on our travels in Europe and I love seeing how the patterns pan out. I especially love buying sock yarn when we're on the Bonnie and shoving it in my jacket pockets because the two don't really seem to go together.

I like to use two small circular needles, I still can't figure out using one circular needle. My lucky in-laws are getting socks for Christmas. My mum and sisters etc will be getting key fobs I'll be making although I haven't figured out what exactly yet.

I too like knitting socks, so portable...I have even done socks for my Dad.....he has such big feet that I need 3 balls of sock wool! He likes them for his motor biking exploits. I also have a friend who adores socks, so much so that when she was expecting I knitted the tiniest baby socks (complete with proper turned heels)

You have inspired me. I have just ordered myself some lovely wool and printed off a basic sock pattern. Tell me - do you use different sock patterns or knit to a basic one?

I have been looking for some different knitting to do. I always have something on the go but usually quite substantial items (currently making my DD a waterfall cardigan in a very boring grey - school uniform colour!) Her husband is very tall and very skinny so I keep him supplied with Aran jumpers as nothing is made in his size - 32inch chest, 19inch arms . I do get a bit bored with that sort of knitting so quick colourful socks are a good alternative.

I know what my family will be getting for Christmas

Finished my first sock - wow, what a sense of achievement :D I used 4 needles for the main bits and 5 on the heel, which I found really worked well for me

Turning the heel felt like some sort of magic - I showed my OH and he said it didn't look like it was possible to do that.

I know in the great scheme of things knitting socks won't change the world but I feel very proud.

A glove pattern was included with my wool and I will have a go at knitting fingers next - now that really doesn't feel possible!

I've had to stop myself buying sock wool! It's like a weird little obsession. I've got several pairs now, enough to stop buying them, although I'll need to get some lighter ones for the summer.

I'm impressed with how tough they are, I wear them for walking distances and they're wearing well.

Also, I bought new boots and extra compeeds but didn't need them. No blisters at all. They seem to be very protective and my feet are softer from wearing them.

I'm knitting more for next winter. My current pair are neon stripes and quite thick so I think they'll be slipper socks.
