Nissan X-Trail - anyone got one?

Recommended Posts

OH had one as a company car from 2003 to 2006. That was the first version which had the Renault 2.2l Diesel engine. Roomy (he's 6ft 5in) comfortable and more economical than you'd think. He got about 44MPG most of the time. No real problems and no failures of anything whilst he had it. Front tyres lasted 45000 miles, it still had the original rears on when it went back at 75000 miles. Having the instruments in the centre of the dashboard instead of in front of you seems odd at first but you soon get used to it. Engine was getting a bit agricultural sounding when it went back. Later models had a 2l diesel, which he thinks were thirstier. He looked at it again in 2009, but they had become too expensive (trying to compete with the Discovery) so he went of a Subaru Forester instead, which he reckoned was a better car anyway - it has a bigger boot and much more rear legroom and sounds nicer with the boxer engine, plus it handles a lot better.

What timing...I sit here reading the Which 2013 car survey which is a survey of owners. Don't know if it will help but here's what it says...

This years best 4x4 is the Nissan qashqai. The X trail doesn't come in the top 10 best buys of the group, but for reliability it's 6th for the model up to 3 years old. Not so reliable for the older models over 3 years old; it mentions common problems being exhaust and suspension costing money in older ones.

But then each to their own it rates quite highly the Honda cr-v which I hated when I test drove it, thought it was like a hair dryer on wheels  sorry if anyone has one.

I have a Qashqai and detest it. It is sluggish, you take your life in your hands if you need to pull out onto a busy/fast road. It's a 1.6 diesel so don't know if the others are better. Also after only 2 years the door trim and air con have packed up so we're waiting for parts but Nissan have a backlog. It feels like a much older car that's had its day. I personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I know someone with an X-trail and she loves it. It's an older one about 2003 from memory but even though her husband wants to get a Range Rover she won't change it.
