piglet
Can anyone help me with some advice on keeping 1 chicken, unfortunately we suddenly lost our bluebell (Bella) late last night, which only leaves my one light sussex (Peach), she is 4 ½ years old and not in the best of health, but I presume it is old age setting in as she hasn’t laid since last Autumn but seems generally ok in herself. We have decided that due to starting a family and wanting to reclaim our garden that we wouldn’t get any new chickens after our remaining 2 passed away. Loosing Bella so suddenly has put us in the difficult predicament as to what is best for Peach. Would it be very cruel to keep her on her own, with regular interaction with us as she is old and needs regular bathing due to her dirtying her rear feathers and she is very choosy with what she will and won’t eat? I do not know anyone else who has chickens who would be able to foster Peach for the later part of her life and the thought of sending her to a farm with lots of chickens (something she has never know as we have never had more than 3 at a time) is totally heart breaking but I don’t know which is better for her. Any thoughts or own experiences you are able to pass on will be gratefully received.
chickencam
I she a Light Sussex hybrid or pure breed? If she is a hybrid and you say that she has health issues then she will be very much into old age. If this is the case I would just take care of her until she too passes on. If she is a pure breed she could live n for several more years, I have a pure breed Light Sussex that is nearly 7 years old and still layer for about 5 months this year.
