The Great Escape!

Recommended Posts

After carefully monitoring the hens in their space confined by eglu netting for the last few weeks with no escape attempts, I decided against my better judgement to allow them to free range whilst I was out all day. I arrived home to find the top of the patio steps was a jumble of chairs, wellies, tools etc. barring the way down the steps to the garden. Darcy was jumping around the guinealu out of her area. I caught her and put her back in with the others. Beak count revealed a missing hen! Daisy, chief hen was no where to be found. We searched everywhere with no success! With OH and and two older children a thorough search was had of the laurel hedge, surrounding gardens and even the road. It was only when I heard laughing down near the eglu I realised she had been found half way up a hazel tree on a very flimsy branch. I can't believe she got up there with clipped wings! Today they have not been happy as even a short trip out they are put back in the run! I don't understand it, they stay put when were about at home but the minute we go out . . . . .

Bless, sounds like they were having a party, and as the last post read, 'Whilst the cats away', Same as kids while the parents are away, they do the same..

I do leave mine out free ranging in their big run whilst we are out, but then i have 3 dogs roaming around the garden which i feel safer with.
