Ladylucan
Could it be possible to convert a plastic wendy house into a chicken house?, I have a plastic log cabin, ( the brown one with yellow doors) I have seen one in one of the pictures on here. If i was to seal up the windows but leaving them with the gaps for the air to circulate, and if iwas to somehow block up the other half of the door, is it possible to use as a house?, Its just sitting useless in my garden and would look nifty as a hen house. ? Snowy
Don't see why not! Sounds cool! Could you fasten weld mesh over the windows, or some shutters that you could open and close (with ventilation holes). You'd need roosting bars, probably with some trays underneath to catch poop ...hm, great potential there I think!
starboyhull
Sounds like a great idea........It would be easy to clean as well as it should be big enough to get a brush in.......You might start a craze with this idea
Ladylucan
I suppose i could mesh all around the inside so as not to spoil the look, that way i can open the windows on a hot day to let the air through. plus if i do the bottom as well it could help make it fox proof, ummmm,, need to get the thinking cap on this one. . but yep could build the bars inside, with some nesting boxes, that really the easy bit, just need to make it fox proof... Milly
I like the idea, but would it be warm enough in winter? The Eglu seems to be double skinned for insulation. Given the fact that chickens seem to eat anything (polystyrene, silicone etc) it might not be easy to find something suitable. But it would make a great summerhouse! starboyhull
I would think it would be warm enough, ater all most people leave the eglu door open all the time so it wouldnt be anymore drafty than that.......
Ladylucan
That was one of my main thought, but again, i did use to leave the eglu door open myself so they could go out into the run when they got up. I will have to have a look at that though, i am not sure how they will fair in winter, it does have holes in parts of it, so i could try that expandable foam and see if i can fill the holes, they may keep the walls insulated. feemcg
I'm sure they'd be fine in Winter - many chickens just roost up trees all year round.
Ladylucan
May just look at doing the roof then, stop the heat escaping through the roof x
Egluntyne
I bet it will be fab! And I'm sure it will be warm enough....after all, those logs cabins are sort of "padded" in their own way....a bit like the double skinned thingy.
Guest
I have seen one converted on a blog somewhere and it was successful. They didn't go to much trouble. Most chickens (with the exception of some breeds particularly the Japanese ones) are really hardy and are used to living outside and just taking shelter where they please. Mine are out in all weathers and actually love the snow and the rain - and they do have the benefit of having duvet coats after all! I think you would need to ensure that it is rat and mice proof, and of course fox proof. I will try and hunt out where I saw the converted child's plastic wendy house used. Guest
I too think it would be easy to convert the wendy house - in fact I have been eyeing up DS house for a while. If I see one out for the dustmen or in a skip I'll snap it up and have a go myself (not that unusual - the one we have was heading for the dustcart!). It would be warm enough no problem, look at those wooden chicken houses- or converted rabbit hutches no birds freezing there!
Ladylucan
True actually, i have a wooden one at the mo, and there are tons of gaps, yet the girls snuggle up nicely and i havent lost one due to the cold, I will def make sure it is fox proof, thats why i might wire it all up inside including the bottom to be extra safe. Dilly i think it was you that mentioned you had seen one already done, i would be grateful if you could find it, i would be really interested in having a look Thanks all. x

Behind her is a wendy house ( brown log cabin) and then two sheds, That wendy house is the one i am looking at converting,..... can now picture everyone rushing to the front page to have alook (no one left on the forum) ,
