Wellsummer

Recommended Posts

Welsummers are very nice birds, they need a bit of handling early on as they can be a little flighty but they are bright and friendly birds generally, they usually lay well (dependant on the strain you choose) And are tough and hardy

There is a bit of a divide in Welsummers (more obvious in bantams) there are utility strains where breeding is concentrated on egg laying ability and egg colour, these are still true to type and correct looking birds though. Then there are the exhibition strain birds where breeding is more geared to a correct appearance, in some (not all) these flocks the egg colour has been sacrificed

Beware of cheap imitations and never add just one bird to any flock though

We have Welsummers and they are lovely looking birds, we also have gorgeous Welsummer cockerel who is a real gentleman. Agree that they are quite flighty birds, but have a lot of character.

Not the best layers but their eggs are well worth waiting for. We had 18 over the summer and were getting 6-10 eggs a day, so I'd say ours tend to lay every other day, now we are heading into winter they have definitely slowed down.
