Newchick76
Hey folks.. Always seems I'm here when I'm worried about the girls and needing a bit of advice from an expert! When I got home the other night, there was what i first thought to be a lash in the nesting box. On closer inspection, it looked like a long tube of membrane filled with an egg white like fluid. We think one of the two girls stopped laying earlier in the year and both have been loosing some feathers, so we didn't worry too much as had heard this could happen during a moult. There has been nothing unusual laid since, over the last few days. Could this be the start of a new laying cycle? Also wondered how long they will stop laying for when moulting? Must be about three months now! Thanks guys xxx Edited November 11, 2013 by Guest
Lavenders_Blue
On closer inspection, it looked like a long tube of membrane filled with an egg white like fluid. That's quite possibly exactly what it was. Hens lay all sorts of funny things from time to time! Tiny eggs with no yolks are not uncommon (known as wind eggs) and this may possibly have been one of those, but without a proper shell. Also wondered how long they will stop laying for when moulting? Must be about three months now! Moulting can seem to go on forever! Are your girls still losing feathers? At this time of year, laying slows down anyway, regardless of moulting, so it may take a little while for them to get their act together again! Newchick76
Thanks so much. That's reassuring. I'll keep a close eye on them but they seem fine otherwise. Yes, still loosing feathers and they did slow down with the laying last year too. Hopefully they wont get chilly!
