ems
Hiya, Sorry I know I've not been on here for a while, but I woke today and let the chickens out of the coop and saw what I thought was wood stain on the new coop. I put them to bed last night at 4.45pm, and I didn't see it when I led them into their coop as the light levels were too low. As my gaze whizzed around the run this morning, I saw blood, everywhere. It's all over the water drinker, all over the wire mesh. One hen has dried blood on her comb, could all this blood rally have come from a tiny tiny wound to her comb!? It looks likes she has wiped her comb on the wire mesh in one area, it's covered!
jimnpaula
Yes it's quite possibly just a small injury that is the source of all the blood. Combs have a very good blood supply (it's a way of radiating extra heat away) so if there's a nick it will bleed a lot. Then the hen will easily wipe it all over the place. Another source of bleeding this time of year is from the new growing feathers coming through. Edit: if they get damaged.
sjp
blood from the comb flies everywhere when the bird shakes it's head which is the naturel response when they get an irritant on the head a little blood goes a long way
