chickencam Posted January 6, 2014 Share Posted January 6, 2014 Anyone else watch this? Not sure I want to watch the conclusion tomorrow. Interested in the mixed emotions felt by viewers. I started with life is for the living, but ended with feeling very glad for my settled life. I am lucky to have been with my OH since I was 16 and he was 18 and we have been married for 21 years, life can be dull and frustrating at times and there are also times when I would love to go off and do something impulsive without asking or accounting for myself. Overall however there is a great deal to be said for contentment. She had more of an issue with being with the wrong guy, whereas he seemed to have a good marriage, I also don't blame him for having a go at his teens when they were so rude at the barbecue. His boss should have been drowned at birth, makes me glad of the little quirks of the people I work with, long may they live. However it seems to be a lot to do with the dissatisfaction we probably all feel at some times with our lives - ie 'the grass is always greener' and 'is this it?' His interaction with his son was interesting especially over the career choice, he wanted him to have a good career but I thought he could also see that he should be allowed to follow his dream so he wouldn't have a life of regrets. But I did love the writers previous book, One Day, although not watched the film version as I don't want to spoil it. That was my feeling too, but my OH is an old romantic and thought it might be ok, don't see how there are plenty of people who would be left hurt by any outcome. freddie Posted January 8, 2014 Share Posted January 8, 2014 I watched it, but felt that as usual, the writer took the easy way out, where everything neatly ended up ok for all parties, except the poor Mrs Carl, who has not been let off so lightly, but expected to just accept everything, as usual.. I thought that the loser in all this was Sally's rather possessive fiancé, he showed that he could be controlling and possibly violent, but it may just have been that he adored her. I would like to think that given a similar scenario in my marriage, I would be able to give my husband a second chance. When you have been with someone for that length of time obviously largely happily, it would seem wrong to just throw it all away. I am however a very pragmatic person, I don't cry over spilt milk and tend to deal with things in a practical rather than emotional way. I would like to read some of the other books written by him, apparently he regrets doing the screen play because he couldn't get the full impact of the book across, so I might read this book too. Grandmashazzie Posted January 8, 2014 Share Posted January 8, 2014 Yes Chickencam,fiancé lost out,but I guess I lost sympathy for him when he was so aggressive.Yes he lost a lot but in my opinion he lost control which puts her at risk of domestic violence.Having worked with victims of domestic violence I have zero level of tolerance.Also I suppose he is young and it's easier to move on.The husband seemed to slot back in to his life,whereas wife perhaps would have found it hard to reinvent herself at her age and she has to live with the lack of trust in the relationship.Not forgetting children who have had the cosy protective bubble of family life burst.
