nin-chicken
I just went to throw in some corn for my girls and noticed that one of them, Felicity, is behaving strangely. She didn't rush for the corn like the others and seems to be keeping to herself and very quiet. She is very slightly huddled and I saw her pooing a kind of yellow slime. I will phone the vets first thing tomorrow but won't be able to take her til later in the day. I'm worried the others will start picking on her. Is there anything I should do tonight? She was absolutely fine earlier today..... Thank you for any advice xx I've just been out to have another look at her and she has laid a soft shelled egg out in the run! I'm sure she laid a normal egg this morning.... She's still a bit huddled and keeps closing her eyes
Claireabella
One of my girls did this once and the soft egg just dropped out in the garden (the other girls promptly ate it ). She was still a little groggy afterwards but was fine the next day. I think when they lay these soft eggs, it does make them a bit under the weather. I'd see how she is doing tomorrow. Hopefully, now the soft egg is out of the way, she should start to feel better.
nin-chicken
That's really good to hear, thank you so much for the reply. Fingers crossed she'll be fine in the morning xx
Millie-Annie
I agree that they look really poorly before laying a softie. In the early days I used to think they would be dead by morning, but next day they would pop out for breakfast full of life Hope that is the case with Felicity
lillybettybabs
I had a hen that would lay two eggs close together, it was almost as if the egg laying conveyor belt went into overdrive! I used to top her protein levels up with mashed egg and a vitamin supplements.
nin-chicken
Thank you all so very much for the replies. Do you think it'd be a good idea to give her some tuna tomorrow to up her protein? What causes these softy eggs? Thanks again!
nin-chicken
Completely forgot to post this morning to say Felicity is fine this morning, thank goodness!! She hasn't laid an egg today which is unheard of for her but I suppose she did lay two yesterday, poor love. Thanks again for the reassurance Xx
