Smelly Girls

Recommended Posts

I have recently inherited 2 new girls (ex bats) from a couple who can no longer look after them. They both appear to be sneezing quite often and have a foul smell coming from their nostrils it appears. They seem otherwise well and are eating drinking and laying.

I have been worming them since getting them yesterday but am a bit concerned regarding their dirty smelly noses. Any thoughts or advice welcome.

Sounds grim. What a shame that you have this to contend with when you have done someone a kindness.

They sound poorly, so I'd take them to the vet and give the bill to the people who fobbed you off with sick hens.

I'd also keep them well away from your own hens.

I think it's a flare-up of either the ILT or IB immunisation virus Thechickenwhisperer. It happens in times of stress and when they preen the stuff gets spread all over them and they do stink. We had one that never stopped and she was nicknamed 'stinky'. But she was a lovely hen, laid well and was very friendly. Eventually she settled down and the stink went. So they should stop once they have adjusted to their new surroundings.

The only thing is Beantree i visited them a month ago and thought at that time they smelled but didnt look into it too much. They seem well otherwise but i think a visit to the vet is needed. The couple who had them were first time owners so dont think they even realised.

I have just bought a walk in run which is getting delivered next week but im scared to let them mingle with my girls as im sure they are infectious. :(

Our girl Daffodil, aka stinky, had a runny smelly beak for about two years Thechickenwhisperer.

Yes they are definitely infectious. If your girls haven't had the standard immunisation program you must keep them well away and preferably downwind, because the IB virus can travel up to 1500 metres I read.

Oh dear ... when we added to our original 3 girls in January we brought 2 new girls home from a farm that vaccinates their birds etc. The weather was foul, and we brought home some very wet bedraggled birds. However, I noticed that Dolly really stunk when we got them back. Thought it was pooey mud on their feet but turned out over the next week she became rattly and wheezy too and I put it down to the smell being infection coming from her beak area. She had 10 days of Baytril and thankfully pulled through but I think it's always worth considering respiratory infection with a smell coming from them like that. Fingers crossed all sorted soon
