Summer Diary - Bantam Wyandotte

Recommended Posts

Hi All, Sorry this is a bit embarassing i have been registered for ages and this is my first post!!.I do enjoy reading the forum but i'm not very good at participating.

Anyway here goes..

After reading loads of articles on Broody's and how to break them i decided to keep a record I also keep tabs on who is laying and when, sad I know but it gives me a indication of maybe any problems. This is Angie our 14 month blue laced Wyandotte.

April 12th went broody - sin bin for about 3 days, started laying again 28th.

May 6th went broody - sin bin, started laying again 17th.

May 26th went broody - sin bin again!, started laying June 6th

June 20th went broody - jail again !!, started laying july 4th.

July 16th went broody left her longer than normal but is now in sin bin again 2days and counting!

I knew she was a broody breed but didn't realise it would be this much.

Is it cruel to keep doing this? If i let her brood will it do more harm? is it something she will grow out of? or will it be like this every summer! And, is this normal or is she classed as exeptionally broody? I can't let her sit on eggs as I don't want the responsibility of unwanted males. I decided to buy pure breeds as i lost 2 hybrids approx 2 1/2 yrs old to egg peritonitis although i am not having much luck at all as Angie's friend had to be PTS with severe egg binding ironically she never went broody once which could have helped her.

Sorry for all the questions and hopefully the diary might be helpful to anyone else who thinks ok i can cope with a little broodyness ;-).

Denise.

Hi Denise. We have blue laced Wyandotte large fowl and they never ever go broody. But we have a gold laced and she is terrible. Longest was 3 months. They don't grow out of it, but they do get a little easier to break.

It's good to break her broodiness. Raising her body temperature takes it out of them and then you have the lost eggs. We had a beautiful vanilla Wyandotte take ill 2 days into her third ever clutch and a day later she was dead.

Thanks Beantree, thats good to know i am doing the right thing by breaking her broodiness. It just seems so cruel she has spent most of her summer in a cage, you would think they would learn after a while.I have actually had her out this afternoon and she hasn't tried to go into the shed - the slightest nosey in the nest box and growl at me and she is back in jail again!
