Solitary chicken - need advice

Hi all,

 

Eager newbie here, been working on my set up and off to get the hens on Monday/Tuesday as the boss and myself are off work for a couple of days. Can't wait!

 

Below are some pictures of the fixed outdoor run I have set up for them. I plan to add a roof over the next couple of weeks to keep them dry. My biggest question is what to put on the floor. Straw? Wood chips? Hemcore? Pine shavings? Nothing?! As you can see, it is bear earth at the moment. I've read about the deep litter method and wondered if I would be able to practice that in this run? Or is that more for just inside the coop itself?

You are not allowed to post pictures when you are new.

You need at least have posted a certain number of post before that starts working. I think the minimum number is 5.

How many chickens are you planning on keeping in there?

Also, might be a silly question, but where's the coop?

I've got the coop, don't worry! Just got it outside the run at the moment as the previous owner fitted an automatic door and I've been tinkering with the timer device. Think of keeping 5/6 bantams in there. They will be out free-ranging around the garden for large amounts of time but the run should be quite handy as myself & the boss both work funny hours

If it's going to be covered I would use aubiose or easibed.

Welcome to the forum! That's a great run . I use Easibed in my run on bare earth. Works a treat with a little bit of poo picking each day and some Stalosan or Biodry every month or two. I'd let your girls do their magic on that ground for a while first though, to get rid of the weeds and rotavate the earth a bit!

Sand is my current favourite. Lots to scratch in and easy to poo pick....
