Misapp
Hi guys It's been years since I posted on here but I need your opinions. About 5/6 years ago I purchased a green eglu and 2 beautiful girls to go in it. They loved it and i loved them but due to a relationship breakdown we had to sell our house and where I was going to meant I wouldn't be able to keep my girls so I gave them to a friend and sold my eglu I am now very much settled in a new house and new relationship and desperately want to have chickens again but my OH just can't get over the price of the cube (want this one because ideally I want 4 chickens who will need a decent amount of space because will only be able to free range supervised because of foxes!). What I'm asking is are they really worth the money?
Ain't Nobody Here
I think you'll generally get the opinion "yes" on this forum . They certainly hold their value well for resale but if you do hang onto your eglu/cube, my experience is that they also wear very well, needing no maintenance other than cleaning or the occasional replacement screw/washer. I've had my eglu for 7 years and it looks much like it did on day one.
chuckmum6
Definitely worth it and even easier then the Eglu. If pennies are tight look for a second hand one or consider a go up. Although, just be aware of the terrible curse of 'morehens' disease, I started with four and now have 17!
jeshen
Yes, I agree with chuckmum6. I'd definitely recommend the Go up, which will comfortably accommodate 4 banties, and is obviously cheaper than the cube. But maybe you're after big girls? Cat tails
You might want to get a second hand Go (and make it into an Up) and invest in a walk in run. So you know for sure your chooks have enough space during the day. I have a Go Up and three bantams. The coop will accomodate four large girls easily, but I find the standard run would be far too small. My three bantams make it seem small already. But yes, they are worth it all the way! jeshen
Might be worth pricing making your own walk-in run, which you could make as large as you like. I have 5 bantams in each of my go-ups but they all free-range all day in our enclosed garden. Very occasionally if there's no one in the house they are left in our walk-in run, which was built by my husband and is much bigger than the omlet one. Misapp
Thanks guys. Think I've managed to talk the OH round and we've measured up for the standard cube to begin with and then next summer we shall get the extended run for them. Shall be doing a bit of Badger proofing this coming week. Does anyone know how long it takes, roughly, from the time you place the order to the day that the man with a van comes to set it up? clucker1
It took 3-4 days for us 4 years ago and delivery to Surrey. Really great man putting it up and delivering chickens, 2 who had laid en route which I just thought was amazing! The cube is fab, no grovelling on the floor to pull out trays, they are all at hip height. IWe stated with 4 and have since had anything from 4 to 12 chickens now at grand total of 8. Enjoy! Misapp
I ordered our cube yesterday with 4 girls and got a phone call today to say they get to us till 15th October seems like such a long time to wait but gives us time to try and sort the badger out and any little things in the garden before they arrive! I'm so excited and already counting down the days yay
