Rocky
Hi there chicken lovers, I can see that has been asked before on here but no recent posts - so hope you don't mind me asking again as I am still learning! So, my set up is the classic with the 2metre run (with full green cover) in a penned area for when we are not home. I am normally home so they have the run of a large garden approx. 1 acre....lucky girls!!! I have just taken delivery of some slabs to rest the eglu and run on as it's going to stay in one spot. Trying to decide what to place on top of these slabs - right now the only time my girls use the run is when they go into lay their eggs and when they want a drink/nibble. However, with winter on its way - am thinking they may huddle in there more often. I've seen rubber chippings which look and sound easy to care for but they are pricey.....however perhaps the upfront investment is wise. Anyone here have a similar set up with a run on slabs? What do you use for chickeny flooring?! Many many thanks in advance for any replies, Katie
Ain't Nobody Here
Lots of Omleteers have tried rubber chips but from memory, they mostly report that they aren't worth the money. Found this quote: We did rubber chips when we had the cube run..... Worst mistake I ever made.... Smelly, impossible to clean, etc etc. was horrendous. If I were you, I'd just use one of the horse beddings - it'll be a doddle if your run is on slabs and the poo will virtually disappear! I use Easibed but there are quite a few different types available.
Rocky
Thank you for your reply, I've put the slabs down - weather forecast good this week so can have a good think about what to use....as they can run about the garden whilst I decide! Got access to some free wood chips - might start that to begin with as worried the rain will make the horse bedding soggy as whilst I have the full cover it can still sneak in at the sides......xxxx
Ain't Nobody Here
Corrugated plastic sheets from B&Q or similar are great for keeping eglu runs dry and letting daylight in!
acw295
We have a small run on slabs, with hardwood woodchips. It is fab! Really easy to do, lasts ages. I rake over weekly, sprinkle ground sanitising powder on it and change it twice a year. Only needs a few bags each time. I use horse beddign in the coop (as I have a horse so use whatever I already have). The rain runs through in the open end so never too soggy and they love to scratch in it. No mud, am a total covert This is our set up (yes I know it is a cheap coop - temporary rather than measure in a rented house)
