Weasels

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I am looking for some advice, I have recently moved into a new house,( i live in aberdeenshire), but the garden has a resident weasel living in it. I'm too scared to let my 2 chickens out of their run as I've seen what they can do to a rabbit but my chooks are use to being able to roam free. Does anyone know If it is possible to deter weasels or have had simular experiences?

I know weasels are tiny and can get in just about anything. I live in very urban area and have seen a few around here too.

I know they can get rabbits, but I thought they mainly do that at night. I think a full grown chicken might be a bit much when awake and angry, for a little weasel. Might be worth to keep the pophole of your coop closed at night though, when your ladies are sleeping.

Might also want to ensure they have a porch light during dusk, so they won't be surprised by a stealthy weasel in the dark.

They are def not nocturnal :( have seen a weasel chase and kill a rabbit. horrible sight. I might be overly pessimistic but I wouldn't take a chance. In fact I would double up my defences. Good luck. Axx

Oh well, there goes my knowledge of weasels then... But nothing much will keep them out. Electric fencing might, but they are so small and agile...

Weasles can only tackle small rabbits because rabbits freeze in the 'carrying position' when grabbed by the back of the neck. I have seen a weasel dragging a baby rabbit twice its size across the road and the rabbit made no attempt to escape even though it so easily could. I very much doubt a weasel will go anywhere near a chicken because it will be in danger of being eaten itself.
