Wow, how exciting :D

how long has it taken you to get this far?

When will you be moving?

what are you going to do with the chooks and eglu?

I hope you have a lovely new life, I've seen some pictures and it looks wonderful

Thanks Cathy.

It seems to have taken forever to get this far, but that's largely because I was so very, very undecided that we kept postponing things. But hubby attended a job interview for a job in NZ last November, job was offered in December, initially for April 07, but that was too quick for me so we explained our circumstances and they agreed to a Feb 08 start date :D . We visited NZ Easter this year for a look round, we liked it and started the immigration process then, had to have medicals, police certs, character references, proof of marriage, proof that the children are ours and so on, and on and on. But anyway they've reached the conclusion that we're legal, decent and honest and in good health with a genuine NZ job to go to, so they've accepted us :D:D:D

Hubby will go in Feb, but I'm planning to stay here until June because son sits his GCSEs then, and then the children and I will fly out to join him as soon as possible after. Unless of course he hates it, in which case he'll be back and I'll be staying put.

Eglu and chooks? My flock is greatly depleted, courtesy of Mr Fox and a friend who thought he was doing me a favour my adopting some of them, and the orange Mark 2 is up for sale :( . It's going onto ebay very soon.

My last 2 hens and green eglu are staying with me for as long as possible but then I will find them all a great home........... they can't come with us  . NZ MAF are so very, very strict about anything agricultural or out doors equipment. Even the soles of our shoes have to scrubbed with Jeyes fluid before we can bring import them  . Camping equipment, bikes and garden furniture etc are very closely examined, and if there's the tiniest speck of dirt on them they charge a fortune to clean it for you. It's actually easier not to take gardening equipment I've been told to save grief and expense. So a used hen house hasn't got a chance of slipping in :cry::cry:

Chooks as pets are not a concept that appears to have hit NZ yet, I've even read reports of councils turning up and randomly slaughtering chickens belonging to poultry fanciers if neighbours have made complaints  So I've considered buying a totally brand new cube and taking it with us, however I'm not sure that it'll be worth it if there's a chance that I won't be able to keep hens.

I might be facing a chook free future :cry:

Still feeling mostly upbeat about it all though, lots of what ifs and a few negatives that upset me if I think too hard about them, but a great opportunity and hopefully a fabulous future in a beautiful country :D:D

These are pictures of the town where we'll be living :D

I've missed out pics of the mud pools, the beach (30 mins away) and the ski resort (90 mins away) as well as the rafting, bungy jumping and zorbing all in Rotorua. Only down side that I can see is the sulphuous (bad egg) smell that accompanies all that geothermal activity  . Apparently it's hardly noticeable most days and you get used to it very quickly. I hope!

Wow  , it looks amazing :D

its a bit rubbish about the chooks, maybe they have something else similar that you could do out there.

I cant believe the thing about cleaning everything - what do they think you are going to bring in on a pair of shoes that have been in a container for 2 months - everything will be dry :?

I suppose it helps you to decide what to take and what to leave a lot easier though. if its been used, sell it on ebay, or put it in freecycle :D

Kate, just caught up with your wonderful news :D

I have had a busy week at work so not much forum time

Congratulations it looks fantastic and what a great opportunity for your children

I hope you find a similar pastime to take over from the chooks, seems a bit silly to not let people keep them, if you ask me :(

Glad you are staying on as a Mod, you can keep us posted on all your news :D

Hope all the packing etc goes well

Have a fantastic time :D:D:D:D

Congratulations from me too! Excellent news :D

I recognise some of the things in the photos from when I visited NZ a couple of years ago. Such a lovely place. I was hoping to go back again in November but other things have got in the way unfortunately :(

Shame about the chickens, although maybe you will be able to get some once you are there and have had chance to really check out the local rules and regs.

What I loved about NZ was when people move they often take the house with them! We saw quite a few being dismantled and loaded onto lorries so they could be rebuilt on the new plot of land! (Makes it easier that they were made from wood and not bricks!).

Look forward to hearing how all your plans are coming along :D8)

I am delighted to hear you have jumped another hurdle on your great adventure.

After all the processes you have to go through to emigrate, getting your new neighbours to fall in with you keeping hens will be easy. Especially if you show photos and explain it all, and with your experience.
