Chickpea
I feel like a right wally. I've been sobbing at the vets when they had to put Maple down. She was my favourite, but has not been herself for the past month. Took her to the vets a month ago when I noticed things weren't right, but he said it was bullying from the top hen. Got that sorted, beak ring and all, but she hadn't improved so took her back again today, said I thought she was swollen near her rear end. Turned out to be a tumour, so she had to be put down. Buried her next door to Dandelion who died in June. I feel like a rotton chicken keeper, two down in a matter of months. Oh well, will be off to Cotswold Chickens tomorrow for two more. The Dogmother
I'm sorry to hear about Maple Lucy. It's always a blow even when you expect it. Our poor vet is used to me crying on his shoulder now New chickens are always the best diversion.
Kathy C
I am sorry to hear about Maple. Of course you can cry. Hens have such personalities, and are so companionable, it would be strange not to. Don't think you did anything wrong, you have loved and cared for your hens and that is more than some animals get, I am sad to say. A day with you would be a dream come true for some girls, and some lucky hens are about to have theirs realised soon.
Egluntyne
So sorry to read about Maple. You mustn't think that you are a bad chicken keeper. You've just been very very unlucky. The best thing to do is get straight back into the saddle so to speak and get a couple more chickens.
