Valkyrie
Has anyone tested this product out yet, and if so was it good? Am thinking of getting some of their compost to sow seeds in.
Old Speckled Hen
Oooh looks interesting. No stockists around here though. At 25 pence per litre it comes out as more expensive than the John Innis seed at 13 pence. JI always seems to work for me.
Old Speckled Hen
No stockists around here though. Like the bloomin Garvo you lot recommended when I got my first chooks I have given up on it now and mix my own.
Valkyrie
I usually do the JI, mainly because when I discovered a really good organic compost it changed hands and it was rubbish after that. I prefer the organic route, but if you can't get good germination then you have to look at something else that's more reliable. It was years before I found Garvo but still not keen as I believe it could contain GM stuff. I'd like to mix my own but can't find anywhere that sells things separately in small quantities. Old Speckled Hen
The hens started leaving the pelletted portion of Garvo and while at first they ate it in a wet mash, even that was finally ignored. So I did some research and now they are spoilt rotten with my version of "Garden Betty's Whole Grain Chicken Feed" I get my grains fromhttp://www.buywholefoodsonline.co.uk/?gclid=CI73l7eAqsMCFczMtAodtDoAfA. via Amazon. They do stuff in 3/5kg bags as well as in bulk. The sunflower seed is what I feed the wild birds and I get that from Twootz. I used to have to pay postage on the Garvo so it works out about the same but the hens don't waste any.
Valkyrie
Oooh thanks for the tip. I dunno, a query on compost and I end up with bird food!
Valkyrie
Update on the Growchar seed compost - Carbon gold stuff. Very good germinating results. Have done a fair few tests. All seedlings are exceedingly healthy grown in that medium. Expensive but peat free. Veggie compost seeds are mixed - much slower to germinate. I've also done a mix of veggie compost and Growchar. Not too bad either which is good if I am to spread the cost!
