Cinnamon
Thanks Gina - what beautiful colours they all are I love the jar with the blackboard label Mmmmm Vodka - thats given me food for thought. Did you add sugar,Gina? And brandy too - I certainly have enough to try both of those! So, what do Crab apple products actually taste like then? And when does one know when they are ripe enough to use? Mine look like this at the moment, & are very firm.....
Chocobo
hmm.. we started picking when they started dropping lots. we didnt want to waste them all
Chocobo
We've now got even more crabapples, as my dad picked loads more. And we've got to sort them all out as we go away tomorrow! so my mums going to have to go down to the local shop and buy lots of sugar and vodka. they fill all the work surfaces
Christian
the jars are from Lakeland Cinnamon http://www.lakeland.co.uk/SearchResults.aspx?kw=jars Might have to get a few!
Chocobo
i also got a couple of the sloe gin bottles- just because they're pretty, and a set of 12 jam jars and lids, which are rapidly being used up
Chocobo
in the recipe i had for crabapple vodka you don't add any sugar, then at the end you can add some sugar or honey to change the taste if you don't like it.
Chocobo
i've got to get some more of the jars! we have loads of jars filled to the brim with crabapples, waiting for vodka and lots of jam in the process... we think we're gonna have to wait till after next week to properly do the vodka and just leave it so the crabapples are just covered, as we have no more big jars, and my mum and we're going away tomorrow till friday! We've already convinced one of my mums friends to have lots!

bronze
Does anyone else only reuse bottles and jars. I've never bought any but wonder if reused looks too skanky for presents.
Chocobo
hmm.. i tend to reuse them as well as buy them, and the ones i buy i reuse We were also making to much to have enough to reuse- and at 4.99 for 12 i thought it was quite a good price
The Dogmother
Bloomin' eck Gina, you've made loads! Bronze, I always reuse jars and bottles... they only way to go! I made 6 jars of crabapple and clove jelly and it looks and tastes fabulous. I still had loads of apples left over but lost the will to live with all that topping and tailing and chopping! Cinnamon
Its thickened up nicely overnight Here are the jars - labels shamelessly copied from Clare I reckon we must have had about 7K of crab apples.I gave 2 lots of 2.5k away on Freecycle (swapped one bag for a bag of home grown Spinach!) Cinnamon
That's the font I use on my jam jar labels too . Devon found that font for me. I like it as it looks a bit like hand writing (although much neater than mine!)
