Swelling in a sprained knee

Recommended Posts

I am hoping for a little advice, I haven't been very well for the last month with abdominal pains, so OH took over household duties. I managed to sprain my knee two weeks ago, when I slipped over on our kitchen floor, which OH had mopped with rather soapy water. Anyway my knee swelled up to three times it size and was impossible to weight bare, I followed advice RICE and spent the three/four days with it elevated, compressed and with ice, which took the swelling down. Over the last week I have progressed from walking little and often with a stick, to limping around unsupported, again just around the house, little and often. Over the last few days, it has ballooned up again and has more than doubled in size. Should it continue to swell like this? It is still painful, particularly if it twists at the wrong angle and is weak, as I would expect. It is just the continued swelling that I am not sure about.

If you've torn a ligament it can take up to twelve weeks to recover fully and it might take a while for the swelling to go down, but I don't think it should be continuing to swell up as you've described. I would get it checked out - at least if you see the GP and he/she says it is normal, then you'll be reassured. Keep applying RICE meanwhile, especially the ice pack bit as that is important even if it's been a few days since the initial injury.
