nin-chicken
Hello, just looking for some advice about one of my ladies, Felicity She went through her first mount last autumn and hasn't laid since. Lately she's laid a few lashes, mostly tiny ones but a couple of big. Most of the time she is behaving normally but occasionally she goes a bit quiet and hunched, just as she does before she lays a softie. Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do to help things along? Will my favourite girl ever lay again? Thank you
Beantree
You need to check her abdomen for swelling and temperature Nin-chicken. I suspect she may have an internal infection but what are her poos like? Green tinged and it may be a trip to the vets, depending on her diet because dark greens like cabbage will give the same effect. Is she eating normally? Based on our experience once they start laying softies there is little you can do, although we have turned round one little girl with a single dose of cod liver oil. Giving extra Calcium can be counter productive because then the Phosphorous/ Calcium balance is wrong. Could try Nettex mineral powder perhaps, which has more of both? nin-chicken
Thanks for your reply. She is eating normally and hasn't been laying softies either. I will keep watch on her poos and pop her to the vet if this continues...
Beantree
Possible the egg yolks are detaching from the ovary and missing the oviduct. They then end up in the abdomen and are generally harmlessly absorbed. This can happen normally to up to 12% of the yolks. Any more and they can build up in the abdomen causing swelling and this can also lead to infection. So pretty important you pick her up and check her abdomen Nin-chicken. I'm away for a week or so. Hopefully Felicity will be OK.
nin-chicken
I took felicity to the vet and unfortunately she has a large tumour in her tummy. I had my son with me so didn't want to have her pts today . Also she seems so bright in herself it just didn't feel right. I will see how she is over the next couple of days and come to a decision.... poor felicity, she is a lovely lovely girl
Mars
If she is eating and drinking and behaving normally I would leave her, a big tumour can be an ovarian cyst and it doesn't have to be immediate threat to life.
