Cheered me up no end!

Recommended Posts

Being as I don't trust anyone in charge of the world I tend to think these tablets are all part of a big scam, I take 7 in the morning and 2 at bedtime at least one of the tablets is to counter the effects of one of the others someone is getting very wealthy at my expense  I pay for a yearly prescription which is a lot cheaper but still a goodly sum.

Damn this getting old, what's it going to be like when I reach 40 ?:oops:

What better way to control the world and take our money than put us on medication.

I was surprised that when you are diagnosed with Hypothyroidism that you get free scripts. I thought it was just for the Thyroxine but you get an exemption certificate which covers everything. I guess because it's autoimmune it could lead onto other autoimmune diseases which meds may be needed for.

But if you're hyperthyroid (another manifestation of thyroid disease) and need medication to suppress thyroxine production you don't get free prescriptions!

Didn't realise that, I always understood that hyper thyroidism was more dangerous to health than hypo. I am hypo. I was only diagnosed because I was referred to an ENT clinic complaining of a lump in my throat, they did all the camera investigations then the consultant gave my neck a good prod and decided that my thyroid gland was enlarged and send to over to another department for an immediate blood test. I had felt rubbish for years, most of my 30's but I just put that down to having three young children at the time. I did request a thyroid test because my gran had terrible health issues after going for years undiagnosed, but that same back negative. This all then happened a couple of years later. Fortunately I have stabilised on 100mcg, just had my annual check, was hoping that they might up it a bit because I seem to be tiring easily and sensitive to the cold more again despite the over heating of on coming menopause. I suppose they don't want to raise it too early. It changed my life once I had stabilised on lecothyroxine, I felt like someone had knocked 10 years off my life. Sounds like I got off lightly though.

I work with someone who is a chronic asthmatic who also suffers with bad hay fever, she has to pay for all of her meds, whereas I get all of mine free. It doesn't seem fair bearing in mind that an asthma attack can be an immediate threat to life. She is also worse off financially, I wouldn't object to means testing for prescription charges. I know that there will then always be people caught on the border line, but it would still be a much fairer system.

Yes, chickencam, it was my understanding also that when I had Graves I was potentially more at risk of expiring than I would be if I were underactive! Fortunately the few scares I had with the medication all occurred when I was in the UK - and not on the occasions I was working in remote African villages with no hope of getting appropriate medical support! Yes, probably a bit stupid of me to have continued with projects that required me to do that - but it was my way of coping with the challenges of the psychological aspects of Graves and Thyroid Eye Disease.

Fortunately having my thyroid removed completely has turned out to be brilliant - didn't manage to do much for the eye disease component but at least I have my brain back and I feel more like 'me' again. Sadly I don't really look like 'me' anymore but .... I'm adjusting.

So I really empathise with anyone coping with either an under or overactive thyroid - it can be so miserable and it can go on for such a long time, impacting mood, energy levels, and capacity to think straight - for me it really attacked my sense of who I am and it's been quite a journey learning to adjust to that. Take care all, and for anyone who wants to, feel free to pm me.
