Recommended Posts

Whilst waiting at the counter in Boots this morning I noticed a sign informing me that there are only 10 more years until I qualify for free prescriptions :P Whoopee do! Isn't it nice to have something to look forward to?

Just off to remove my tongue from my cheek!!!! 8)

Made me wonder what other delights my advanced age will allow me access to......?

I was surprised that when you are diagnosed with Hypothyroidism that you get free scripts. I thought it was just for the Thyroxine but you get an exemption certificate which covers everything. I guess because it's autoimmune it could lead onto other autoimmune diseases which meds may be needed for.

Yep that's me :lol::lol::lol: Good job too as I take a right old lot of meds for my collection of conditions

Leaves me with pennies (err who I am I kidding  ) to spend on the chickens :D

You also get a medical exemption when you have been diagnosed with cancer and diabetes, im sure there are a whole host of other ailments that deserve free prescriptions for too.

Yes that's right. I was just surprised about being Hypo. I didn't think it would be in the league of cancer, diabetes.

Mimi I have only been diagnosed since 2012. Been a real roller coaster!

I've had free eye tests since I was 40. Glaucoma in the family. Was handy having my mum around to confirm it - out came all her meds. But I like to have that super duper test done where you have a photo shot of your eyeball and it looks like a Martian landscape - and all the other super duper things that go along with that, have to pay for that but it is worth it as it will detect anomalies much sooner.

And further to my mum's glaucoma, she no longer has medication for it - the laser ops for the cataracts relieve any pressure - she's well happy!

Yep, only I was Hyperactive first. Diagnosed as Graves disease, triggered by my first pregnancy, over 21 years ago now. Horrid very scary and I nearly miscarried my son!! Treated and managed my illness which got better during the further 2 pregnancies, but oh so much worse after :( Then after my 3rd C section my consultant advised I be sterilized and then I had radioactive Iodine to "neuc" half my thyroid (was the theory) Completely died within a year  So no thyroid. I also have PCOS, so 2 endocrine disorders and I'm high risk for diabetes (take preventative meds daily) Asthmatic, oh boy this goes on a bit  I'll stop (but there's more :( )

Not felt right since my thyroid went wrong in my twenties. How are you adjusting? Definitely a roller coster, free meds the only plus

I've always assumed the free prescriptions for thyroid disease ( another one here) are because if you don't take the tablets, it would eventually kill you. Very slowly. It didn't seem right that I got free prescriptions for everything though, even antibiotics and painkillers. My sister, severely asthmatic all her life and on a mixture of inhalers and tablets, has had to pay for them for 40 years until she was also diagnosed as hyperthyroid.

This morning's news on the radio was good - those overweight are not so likely to get dementia. So underweight people can now eat as much choc as they like. On the other hand I still have too much padding and therefore my choc consumption is still limited - big time!

3 months and I'll have to start paying for prescriptions :(

That's what I thought, went for a check up yesterday fully expecting them to day I can come off all meds in three months time.....OH no, they are talking about keeping me on tamoxifen for another five years, got to see an oncologist to see if that's the case.....another 5 years of hot flushes here I come

The way things are going, you probably have to wait a lot more than 10 years to get free prescriptions! I can also foresee a day in the not too distant future when "Ooops, word censored!"ody will get free prescriptions.

I currently have to take 18 pills (yes, not a typo) each day and 2 inhalers and I am not exempt from charges. So those of you that currently don't have to pay, good luck to you and enjoy while it lasts.

Being as I don't trust anyone in charge of the world I tend to think these tablets are all part of a big scam, I take 7 in the morning and 2 at bedtime at least one of the tablets is to counter the effects of one of the others someone is getting very wealthy at my expense  I pay for a yearly prescription which is a lot cheaper but still a goodly sum.

Damn this getting old, what's it going to be like when I reach 40 ?:oops:

I have this awful condition, I keep imagining I see posts about car insurance :lol: Sorry Pixiedust

Yeah just seen this. Bit random :lol::lol: Was supposed to be in the other thread!

Mimi I was awful to begin with. I used to care full time for my mum and they believe stress caused it. I don't have children. I swing between Hyper and Hypo on occasions. The worst thing was when I initially took Levo I got the throat swelling. Hated that. Thankfully that seems rare now. On 200mg a day and on bottom end of normal range for this area. I see an Endo. My weight seriously ballooned about 8 years ago which is when they think I first started suffering, maybe when I was about 37. I get some joint issues and at times have trouble walking.

In general I seem ok on Levo at this point, but I tire quickly and my skin is very dry.

You sound to have Hashimotos thyroid disease. My best friend developed this a couple of years ago after have a traumatic pregnancy and then her baby dying after a week (it was expected the baby couldn't survive outside the womb due to various conditions, very, very sad :( ) She goes up and down and has to monitored closely.

I have always struggled with my weight since my first pregnancy. Both thyroid disease & PCOS make you predisposed to weight gain, also making weight loss really difficult!!! I am pretty stable, but did have a blip last year due to work stress. I originally had a huge goiter and it seemed it began to swell and again, painful to swallow/eat/drink :( and my levels went wobbly too :(

Lots of tests up & down to endo :( after no visit for 10 years and having been signed off (pure joy not to have to go anymore!) Well it was all stress, sorted the stress and it's back to my "normal" again, phew. I take 150mg a day.

Both hyper & hypo are just horrible to deal with :( you feel out of control.

Yes I do have Hashimoto's. Most people with thyroid do but are generally unchecked. My Endo explained I was born with it but if I hadn't suffered the stress it may never have come out and needed treatment. I am rather feisty with the Endo's, (no I rarely see the same one), I have them agreeing to me being below 1 on TSH and won't buy all their bull. I was deplete of vitamin D and very low on B12. My bad walking, in general, is around my bad time of the month as for some reason all the hormones effect my achilles tendon and calf muscle - a weird and rare symptom of Hashi's.

I suppose its my Alzheimer's kicking in but I forgot that I was 40 when I left the RAF in 2001 so I am 54 really :roll:

I agree with you Geold, When I was in the RAF I did a tour of Gulf War 1 in 1991 and had all the injections/Naps tablets etc etc, after I returned I developed a blood disorder with aching joints and limbs. I was tested in London at the Gulf War Syndrome The army captain doctor suggested that it was the injections that caused my blood disorder which was similar to Lupus SLE.

The government denied there was such a thing as "Gulf War Syndrome" but as it is I get a war pension which is given due to injuries caused during military service :? Make your mind up on that one.

I have to pay for my prescription despite being poisoned by my own government, don't get me started on job seekers allowance :lol:
