craftyhunnypie
HI everyone! Today is the day I get my newbies to go in with the original Omlet girls - all in the new orange cube. I'm so excited! WOnder what my girls will make of them??? I'm all a bit anxious about it all - but at least I've got my mk2 if there is too much fighting. Got anti peck spray, just need to find where I put the water pistol!!! I don't stand any messing me! Been thinking up names all night & writing them down, so I don't forget. I wanted 4 newbies, but hubby says 3 is plenty and he doesn't like odd numbers ie: 7. I might see Henypenny there, as she is also going Craeg Mhor Poultry this afternoon! Think my sister is going too for 2 more chooks. She has taken to this chicken keeping. Mind you her naughty Shirley Sherbert (the leghorn) is now flying over the netting & strutting her stuff around the farm! She still goes back to the shed to lay tho, which is good. I wonder who will be boss in my cube after today? At the moment it's Blanche ( the pepperpot) - not nasty - just tells the others when to go bed, how to use the new drinker etc...Mother hen if you like. I am a bit worried. Hubby said to give the newbies one night in the MK2, but I'm thinking....nah, just put them in the cube straight away. What do you all think? chelsea
ive not done any introductions. but if it were me i would keep them seperate for a while. I would let the new girls free range whilst the others are in the run and then alternate it so the newies go in the mark 2 run and the oldies are out freeranging - just so they get used to each other. I would let the newies sleep in the mark 2 and then gradually build it up from there. Lucky you, how exciting and you know, we will want pictures dont you?!!! puffball
When I introduced a couple of newbies I put them straight in the run with the others. After curiously inspecting each other they strutted off in seperate directions. That night the newbies slept outside the coop(which my hens tend to do when in shock or unsure) but after a few days they had the pecking order sorted. I would probably introduce them but watch to make sure there is no violent pecking. Also if they don't seem to be getting on give it a week or two before you decide to get rid of some(if it got that bad). Hope I can be of some help. craftyhunnypie
I'm going to put them in straight away I think, if it is violent - then I have the mk2 to fall back on. It like us humans, we don't know if we are going to get on with everyone we meet do we? If they settle straight away, then I will be wanting bantams for the mk2 then - where is best (near sandbach, Cheshire) to get bantams from? I love pekins, seabrights etc. Thanks Emma.x
puffball
Yeh I think that is a good idea. I got my bantam from a friend who didn't need her so I don't really know where you could get some!
Tweety
hi Emma, Lucky you! Can't wait to get some more chookies myself. Please can you tell me where Craeg Mhor Poultry is? I've seen it mentioned elsewhere on the forum and have tried to look it up on Google, but can't find anything about it. Have a great time getting your new girls! craftyhunnypie
Right it's Creag Mhor Poultry / Cattery & Caravan Club Site. Wrinehill Road, Wybunbury, Cheshire. CW5 7NS tel: 01270 820626 If you put the postcode into autoroute or multimap, it will pinpoint where it is. Not far from Nantwich & Bridgemere garden World. I'm going at 4pm. So I won't get to see Heny penny off the forum, who has an appointment at 2.30 to get her chookies. We will then bring them home, put them in with the others - watch them for about an hour, then we are going out for a meal. I will have to choose wisely for my diet. But I'm on a red (meat) day - so it will be easier! The chooks will be left to sort out any differences whilst we are out! Emma.x
Karen & co.
Emma do you need an appointment for Craeg Mhor? I was rather hoping to just turn up karen x
craftyhunnypie
You don't need an appointment, but he might not be in - that's all! I presume you can just turn up too. He's a nice man, a very very nice man! I'm wanting a white leghorn, a lacey magpie & a lacey black rock. ( there were some beautiful laced birds ). He's also some very young birds about 9 - 10 weeks old. I think there were some bluebells in there ( no older ones mind). The Ambers were nice too. Let's face it...all chickens are nice! Tweety
Thanks Emma. Am so tempted to get in the car immediately and drive over to have a look, but need to be sensible and sort out some accommodation for new girls first. I can't believe that I spend so much time thinking about chickens! Amanda
craftyhunnypie
He also sells wooden houses with a built on run for £75 each! Or use a shed & buy some netting from Wikinsons - that's what my sister did. Have I tempted you some more??? Naughty aren't I? Chickens are £8 - 10 each - except for the warrens, which were I think £6.00 each. Gosh he's going to be busy today! Emma.x
Tweety
Yes, it is even more tempting! I was trying to be very sensible and save up for another cube before getting any more chookies, but £75 sounds so reasonable, doesn't it, and it will take me ages to save enough for the cube. Do you know if Creag Mhor is open on Sundays? I hope the answer is no, otherwise I can feel a little trip down the M6 coming on! craftyhunnypie
Hiya everyone! just come in from the garden! The man said to keep our new ones - young ones separate for 2 - 3 weeks, let them get in a routine. So they are in the pink eglu on the decking! Hubby has built me the kids gazebo we got reduced from Wikinsons for £7.50. It also comes with a paddling pool, but I don't think we'll bother with that! We have put the gazebo over the eglu & it's great. New chookies are settling in perfectly. They are eating from the grub, drinking from the glug. They have had a bit of sweetcorn. They are so placid and quiet. Well they were until they saw Holly, our cat! One started bawk bawking. But they are quiet again now. I have got a Magpie called Bounty A Black Rock ( quite lacey) called Rolo & a white leghorn (very beautifully laced) called Smartie. I am over the moon! I have taken photos - but we are off out for a meal in a minute to celebrate new chookie arrival! So I will put them in my gallery later - sub gallery will be called new chooks! What did you get Heny penny? I know you went, cos when I wrote my address down - there was someone who had bought 6 chickens & was from Colwyn Bay! Hope you are pleased with your chooks - as I recommended the place to you! I've got a big beamy smile from ear to ear & may have to do the chicken dance in the bedroom, whilst getting ready to go out! Emma.x

I know you went, cos when I wrote my address down - there was someone who had bought 6 chickens & was from Colwyn Bay! Hope you are pleased with your chooks - as I recommended the place to you! Hi Emma Sorry im so late in posting but I have been transfixed by the new Hens The cube arrived yesterday and although there was quite a few pieces missing we managed to get it assembled and as soon as I finished work this morning we headed straight down to Craeg Mhor and you were absolutely right the man is a complete sweetheart, somehow I ended up getting 6!!! I just thought 4 would be so lost in that big cube 2 warrens named Henrietta & Hermione 2 White Leg Horns named Heulwen & Hafwen 2 Red Star's named Hilda & Hazel We got home about 5pm and the girls settled in really well despite the appalling weather. Me and the OH are still sat in the conservatory watching them, we haven’t even sorted dinner out yet which is extremely unusual for us .... believe me! I can't thank you enough Emma im so chuffed, Im hoping the weather will be a bit brighter tomorrow so I can put some pictures on for you to see

Henypenny
Thanks Karen, congratulations to you as well, it's sounds like Craeg Mhor was the place to be today hey Just spent the last half hour waving a torch around trying to get the two warrens' into the cube (the other four went in fine) I gave up in the end, crawled into the run and lifted them into the cube..... I hope they catch on by tomorrow evening Edited August 18, 2007 by Guest
craftyhunnypie
Congrats on the newbies!!!! Aww warrens are lovely. My sister got a warren last week - called fluffy bum due to her extremely fluffy white feathered bottom! She also got a red star, a leghorn & an amber. Her leghorn laid within a hour of being home. Her red star has started laying today. Well, we have just come in from a lovely meal out at The Bears Head @ Brereton & all the chooks & newbies are all tucked up in bed. Bless them! I can't believe the newbies know what to do. It's so cute. They are all cuddled tightly together, it's very sweet to see. I can't wait for tomorrow - it's forecast sunny spells & showers - so I'm going to make the most of the sunny spells with the chickens & getting to tame the new ones. Ah, I must update my profile! Then I'll try & pop my photos onto my gallery if I'm not too tired. Emma.x

feemcg
Lovely young girls- I wondered what a Magpie was - looks like a Daisybelle with a bit more white ( I was confused cos I thought I read in another post somewhere a Magpie was like a Bluebelle). Hope they settle in well
