Black-White-Blue
Just a quick post. Does anyone have Brown Leghorns, we've just acquired a pair and apart from looking absolutely beautiful that's all we know about them. They seem to get on with a pair of Bluebells of the same age. They're being kept apart from the older Blackrocks, and White Sussex at the moment. We've heard that Brown Leghorns, are a wee bit flighty are they, and what else? Thanks in advance. The Dogmother
You're right; Leghorns in general are more flighty, although they calm down when they come into lay. They are good fliers, so best to keep their wings clipped until they are settled. They are hardy birds, and will lay well - good sized eggs too. Enjoy! mullethunter
There's a blog called Carols Chickens and I think she has them
Beantree
We have Brown Leghorn bantams B-W-B. Hatched 5 pullets this year which don't look that far from laying now at 18 weeks. They fly very well and would be happy to roost in trees if we didn't have a covered run. They also lay very well for two or three years. Friendly birds and very confident, our remaining hen will attack anything getting into her run as the TNN top hen, who is twice her size, found out! We don't clip wings unless absolutely necessary because it removes their primary defence in the event of a predator strike.
Black-White-Blue
Thank you for the replies. Said chooks, having spent 48 hours in the run, we let them free range today. So far no problems at all. Have to say they look incredibly flash in the sunshine. Give them a grape, and they follow you like dog. The man is coming with the machine tomorrow to level the ground for the 4 x 3 meter covered run. TTFN.
Mars
I have about 10 white stars and white leghorns I bought them because they don't like people. I don't want hens waiting for treats at the step when I open the door White leghorns don't wait for treats at the door. White leghorns are flighty so they fly to the kitchen window and start pecking at the glass to remind me of their treats they are not bullies and they lay very well
Black-White-Blue
Well what a difference between two birds from the same clutch. The brown Leghorrns, one 'Brownie' is, so bold it's amazing. When I take a handfull of sweet corn out for a treat, she jumps up on my arm, and I look like a falconer! The other sister 'Pansy' is so easily frightened, she runs though she is improving becoming a bit more forward, it might be because she's a real (Diva) show winner? The man, and the digger came and the frame for the run is up. Things are progressing nicely, and a pair of 'Marans' are in the frame. Question:- How did 'Livorno' morph into 'Leghorn' ? I'll try and get some pictures of 'Brownie' taken and posted.
Black-White-Blue
Quick update, we now have a 4m x 3m covered run. 2 Marans have joined the peep, along with a White Sussex, that's an absolute corker. We could have a pair of Buff Sussex, next week, if I can convince Eileen, SWMBO. Just love chickens.
