ChickenPoopGarden
Was I just being a bit foolish buying POL hens at the end of September? Clearly I wasn't in the mood to wait and I wouldn't swap my Chickiedoos for all the layers in the world, but I can't help wondering if this will negatively affect their laying potential. Of the six, only Marshmallow has started laying (which took me by surprise because it is DARK and COLD) but after nearly 2 weeks of productivity, I had wondered if it wouldn't rub off on the other girls. Secondly, I was thinking of adding two more big birds to the flock, making 8 over all, but is winter a sensible time to buy?
Ain't Nobody Here
I seem to always get new girls in Sept/Oct and they've all started laying before Christmas. Hybrids should lay all year round so the time of year you get them isn't so important.
mullethunter
Accepted wisdom seems to be that the older they are when they start laying, the better. And that winter is a good time to add newbies because there's less daylight for fighting. So I'd say you're looking good
ChickenPoopGarden
Ooooh! Exciting! And I think Lobelia has started laying, too! Yeehaaa!!!!
ChickenPoopGarden
Someone else is definitely laying. We have five little banty eggs sitting in the pottery chicken! If Marshmallow lays again today, there'll be six and I'll be able to fill and egg box! (I wont fill one, because I'm going to eat them, but I COULD!)
