ChickenPoopGarden
Thought this would be an interesting thread! Go on, who is or was your very best layer and what breed/mix was she? I'll start... Marshmallow the White Silkie! She has been laying a pretty white egg a day since the beginning of November!
mullethunter
Last year it was my 18 month old Wyandotte bantam Penny (top hen), this year my 1 year old Pekin Shelley.
Minnie&Moose
Our very best layer ever is Mavis - a columbine hybrid. Mavis is 6.5 years and even laid all through this summer, averaging 5 green eggs a week! She's always followed a 'pure breed' laying pattern, gives up at the end of Oct/early Nov and then starts again mid Feb. But if she never lays again I won't mind - I'd just like her to see another spring! At the moment though it's Hildebrand and Hatchet, the ex bats, who are still laying most days - first time I've had eggs in the winter time for ages! gavclojak
Good grief I don't have a clue, I have six girls and I got 1 egg yesterday but usually I get around 4/5 eggs daily....I don't have a clue who is laying or who is freeloading. Barbara has finally stopped laying, but she is a very old arthritic ex-commercial girl who is having a moult
Luvachicken
Er, I could tell you who my worst layer is ..... Lucie Amongst broodiness and antibiotics I couldn't say
Hippie Chick
My best layer is Agnes, my Rhode Rock. I haven't been keeping chickens long, she started laying in August, produced large, perfect eggs with strong shells straight away and has probably only missed 3 or 4 days since then. ChickenPoopGarden
Yup, the kids have just come in from playing with the chickens, and Marshmallow is in the nestbox, the blighter!
Beantree
We haven't any brilliant layers because they are all Pedigrees. But it occurred to us the other day that three of the breeding sets each have their best layers and all of them have one spur!?
sjp
I have got one best layer but I do have 2 sets of good layers my CLB crosses are very good layers both the green eggers and the shades of cream layers. the other ones are daughters of my welmar ( cooper black maran x Welsummer cockerel) cross they didn't inherit their mothers dark brown egg genes but they aren't far off her laying prose the worst one has to be my Barnbar never laid more than 4 eggs a week and only lays if the sun shines the other is my Gold legbar stated off reasonable but after her first moult more or less gave up laying barely got a dozen eggs out of her this year
