pkirk25
Hi all, Here is a pic of my little flock: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1lt1y0ngqd6uo8t/2015-12-10%2010.55.30.jpg?dl=0 There are 4 hens - the browns are 2 years old and the white ones are about 5 months old. Once they started laying, the whites started making a huge racket in the mornings - going on for about 30 minutes from about 6.30am. My impression is that one of them is on the nest and that the other is desperate to lay her egg and hence the noise. As you can imagine, the neighbours are unhappy. One lady who works shifts has been very forthright in her view as to what is and is not an acceptable noise level. I've started to close the hutch door at night and open it after 7.30am in order to at least allow the neighbours a normal morning lie-in but that just postpones the racket. Has anyone found a way to stop this morning chorus? Thanks in advance.
jimnpaula
Allow me to make your URL clickable: (you need 5+ posts to be able to do pictures etc) https://www.dropbox.com/s/1lt1y0ngqd6uo8t/2015-12-10%2010.55.30.jpg?dl=0 Sorry to hear about your woes, can you squeeze another nesting area into the run? Either a purpose built one or a cat carrier/cat toilet/plastic box with a lid and pop-hole type arrangement? Otherwise closing the door might be the only option to move the noise to more acceptable times. Remember that dogs, children and gardening activities make noise too and most people put up with those. pkirk25
Thanks for fixing the picture. For now I will close the door. I 100% agree with you about traffic, dogs and suck making noise as well but good relations with the neighbours are important too so I have to show willing. Appreciate the advice. gavclojak
In the summer I cover the cube with a dark blanket to stop them waking to early, I do appreciate your worries and yes neighbours make noise cutting grass etc but generally not at 6-30am! pkirk25
For first time ever I started to use the hutch door and I could just about hear them crowing in the mornings for a few days and then it stopped. I have stopped closing the door for the last week or so and they have not resumed the early morning crowning. My guess is that it gets pretty loud in there and they trained themselves to be quiet. Ain't Nobody Here
I'm glad you're managing the noise levels successfully, I know how stressful it can be . I'm lucky I seem to have a quiet flock at the moment, hope it continues .

Mars
My impression is that one of them is on the nest and that the other is desperate to lay her egg and hence the noise. Try to put any thing looks like a nest box with some straw or sawdust in it, if it worked then put a proper nest box
