Ursula123
Has anyone used Heygates with flubenvet? I usually buy Marriages from farm and pet place online however I noticed that my local Cornwall farmers shop is stocking Heygates and wondered if the differ that much. Any advice would be much appreciated.
mullethunter
No but I'll be interested in the answer
Hippie Chick
I've only used Heygates, not Marriages. The chickens all readily accepted it and ate it with great enthusiasm. There were no problems with it and I've used it twice now. No worms to be seen and the chickens aren't showing signs of any.
Lewis
If you can get Heygates locally I would go with that
Valkyrie
I ordered Marriages online but I've vacuum packed portions to last longer than April! Lewis - would the vacuum packing (oh dear, how can I say this without it looking daft?) affect the effect of the Flubenvet? In addition I have also got the Flubenvet powder now, so covered on all fronts. I had Heygates before which they didn't like, so it will be interesting to see if they turn their noses up with this new lot. The pellets are larger than their regular organic feed. Can't imagine why vacuum packing would affect the medication Personally I think Organic feed is a waste of money unless you buy organic reared birds and are certified. Valkyrie
Thanks Lewis. Yeah, sometimes they get other feed, but they like the smaller pellets. You should see them today - whinge whinge whinge. They looked in the feeder in absolute disgust and then walked away! I have no fear of wild birds reintroducing worms to the garden - they are the ones eating the pellets! I'm thinking by tomorrow they'll be so desperate for food they'll eat what they have!
Hippie Chick
Personally I think Organic feed is a waste of money unless you buy organic reared birds and are certified. I think Organic feed is not a waste of money and people who are able to buy it, and choose to do so, are supporting farmers and producers who choose less damaging and more wildlife friendly methods. Such methods can reduce soil and water contamination of synthetic pesticides, fertilisers and herbicides, and helps to support local wildlife and biodiversity amongst other benefits. mullethunter
I agree with Hippie Chick that the production of organic feeds etc can have environmental benefits. But I also agree with Lewis that I don't think there are likely to be any significant nutritional benefits.
Lewis
Should have clarified, I meant Organic layers pellets from a nutritional point of view for keeping backgarden poultry. I'm pro-Organic practice and worked for 3 years lambing on an organic farm so know all about the benefits and how difficult it is to obtain certification. I'm also a massive fan of organic dairy production and always buy organic milk when I can.
Valkyrie
The girls are starving. Nasty pellets! Hard cheddar - they have to eat it or go without! They are already queuing up for their tea. Pity I'm cutting back on their (Flubenvet doused) corn as the nights get shorter.
