First egg - panic!

Recommended Posts

Okay so I got home from a day out and walked into the WIR, was so distracted trying to stop the girls from escaping that I didn't see where I was treading.....CRACK! I trod on their first ever egg!!

I'm such an idiot!

Straight away both of them went to investigate, and they both might have had one or two tiny pecks at it before I could distract them with their treat bowl.

Are they going to deliberately break and eat all their eggs now? I'm really worried that they will!

Please advise and reassure!

Thanks

I put my first egg in my apron pocket, went into the kitchen lent against the worktop and crack, just to say did not learn my lesson as have done it since. :D

As for egg eating I wouldn't worry too much, most of us have the occasional soft or thin shell egg that gets eaten and does not lead to a habit.

Enjoy your next egg which will possibly be tomorrow !eggwhite!

I've dropped eggs when collecting them many times and the hens always dive on it and peck at it before I can clear it up.

Never had a problem with egg eating (touch wood!) - although I wouldn't tempt fate by leaving the egg there for them to finish off.

Thanks for your reassurances everyone. She missed a day on Sunday but then yesterday I got home to find one little egg in the nest box, safe and sound! Phew! I think she's become a moody teenager now though as yesterday she came over for her treats but then strutted off before I could give her any cuddles
