Mrs Meany's Top Tips!

Recommended Posts

I am always trying to find ways to recyle and re use things...from both an environmental and economical point of view. Thought this might make an interesting thread.......

Latest discovery is that the colour snatcher sheets from the laundry (which I only bought because they were 99p per pack of 30 in Lidl!!) are great, dried out and used for shoe polishing cloths...Ta Dahhhh ( as they say at Boots  )

Plastic trays from supermarket veggies (esp mushrooms) are good for storing cleaning products either by the sink in the kitchen or in the bathroom or with bottles of shampoo etc in them. Easy to clean, contain any spills and easily moved to clean round :D !

Has anyone else got any other tips  ?

I'm currently a little bit over half way in a waste reduction experiment. Organised by my waste collection company.

I try to limit my non recyclable waste as much as possible.

Have manage to reduce it to about 100 grams per week. (I live alone)

I changed the kitty litter to one I can flush through the toilet (which saves loads!)

And I bring my own bag when shopping. Not only for the general things, but also for fruit and veg.

Plastic still makes up far out the most of my (luckily) recycable waste.

Well I have always been erm 'careful' with the small things which give me carte blanche to overindulge on completely unnecessary other things :D This tendency is magnified in Portugal because things, any things, are in short supply  I use 5l bottles of water as mini greenhouses cut in half lengthways to bring on seeds, and 1l bottles with the tops cut off as mini greenhouses over cuttings or as fly traps (cut top off, fill bottle with sugar solution, invert top back over so they can't get out very easily) and any polystyrene tray is used under yogurt pots which are being used as seed containers, to catch the water. Old bed linen goes to OH for cleaning bikes, old clothes and shoes are kept for gardening/decorating. We use vinegar a lot for cleaning especially glass, I use bicarbonate to clean teapots/spoons every so often, as well as in a boil wash to clean washing machine. Use ash on newspaper to clean woodburner glass. I used to use those blue mushroom containers to collect veg peelings to carry outside to the compost bin as they were sturdy. Anything we can burn is kept as kindling. I even found myself s"Ooops, word censored!"ing up part of the gravel car parking area to use as a mulch on seedlings last week  Old inner tubes are used as plant ties. I sense a theme here, and I sound like a bizarre person so am going to stop

I use Pringles containers to store crochet hooks - just wrap and stick some pretty paper around them, keep all yoghurt pots and pot up seedlings into them. See through plastic veg/fruit containers get used as mini greenhouses over a seed tray, also in winter use them to mix up girls warm mash so if they get muddy can just quick rinse under outside tap and throw into recycle box. Also use these to give friends eggs in as I don't have egg boxes.

Banana skins make excellent shoe polishers.

Keep old tights to tie plants to stakes - stretchy so better for the plant than twist ties with no give.

Old towels and sheets go to OH for dust sheets etc. Lidded plastic containers always end up in his van with screws and bits and prices in.

The plastic Jacob cracker boxes ( like the ones that come out at Christmas ) or even quality street/roses plastic tubs, I get OH to cut a hole in and this is where I put baited rat traps so no chance of catching birds or other animals
