Luvachicken
I have been given 4 bin bags and a huge carrier bag full of wool. There is all sorts of wool, some 4 ply and some that look like balls of string but soft, huge 400g balls, bobbly wool and goodness knows what other kinds of wool. I've looked at the labels and most only have a picture of knitting needles on them so can I use them for crochet ? Also how do I know which size crochet hook to use ? Cat tails
You can use any to crochet, although I personally don't like fluffly wool (gives your work the appearance as if it has hair) or very uneven wool, because it's just too fiddly. True wool or acryllic will stretch a bit compaired to cotton. (Not practical for things like amigurimi, but perfect for scarfs etc.) To judge which hook you need is to just try something out. If it is difficult to get your hook through with yarn or the yarn keeps slipping of the hook, then you probably use a too small hook. If you get real big holes in your work, you need to go a little bit smaller.
Luvachicken
Thanks Cat tails - I knew you would know the answer I have chosen some of the wool for myself to perhaps make baby blankets for any grandchildren that come along - by the time they do I will be an expert My Mum might take some of the wool and my sister too when she comes over and then I think I will give the rest to charity. Luvachicken
A wool stash! Keep it and play with it to your heart's content! Yes, but there is so much that I need another room to put it in And my friend brought 2 more bin bags full today but I sorted through that already and popped it to the charity shop. bluekarin
How exciting! I would say the fluffy wool might be good to make amigurumi or teddys with, as the fluffy nature will make a fab fur coat for those sort of things. To find out if any of your yarn is acrylic or pure wool, you can try burning a small piece to see if it melts (acrylic) or burns (wool). There are various websites which can tell you how to work out what type of thickness yarn it is by doing the wpi test (wraps per inch). If you have the room, keep it all! But if you don't, I would keep what you are drawn to and charity shop the rest. Oh, and in answer to your question, you can use anything to crochet with! Cord, wool, yarn, metal thread, sewing thread.
