Bluebubbles
Hi, We have been thinking about getting ID tags for our girls (similar to the rings put around legs but with a traceable code/phone number etc printed onto it. We were considering getting them microchipped, however we doubt someone would think to take a hen to the vets to be scanned if in the unlikely event we had an escapee. It would be really helpful if we could gets some thoughts on this and possibly a good supplier. Many thanks for your time BB
The Dogmother
Errrrmmm, am I the only one here wondering 'but why?' Why not just clip their wings and make sure that you have adequate fencing?
Cat tails
Errrrmmm, am I the only one here wondering 'but why?' Why not just clip their wings and make sure that you have adequate fencing? No not the only one I gave mine a leg ring, but only to tell them apart, as they are both same breed and colour. Although I can keep them apart by now. BridieLou
I wouldn't bother for mine. We considered getting them colour coded leg rings so we knew which was which, but I can tell them apart easily now. Agree with the others - just clip their wings. Egluntyne
I wouldn't waste your money, if I'm honest.
The Dogmother
I wouldn't waste your money, if I'm honest. Exactly the reply that I gave someone the other day when they asked me about suprelorin hormone implants for hens with peritonitis. Clip their wings and sort the fences. Once they realise where home is, and food comes from, they won't stray far. My aunt's hens used to forage over the lane, and acted as an effective traffic calming measure, but all came back to roost of an evening. gavclojak
Yes to be honest I pop leg rings on when they first come to me because they are usually in very poor condition and a unrecognisable within a few weeks.
Bluebubbles
As for the why question - it is just in case. The garden is fully fenced in, they have their own run when we are not here and wings are clipped. We also have to rabbits that are chipped, they have a similar set up (apart from being inside overnight) neither have ever escaped but its just a case of being safe rather than sorry. A neighbour of ours also keeps hens, he uses leg rings and has put his phone number on them - so simple I cant believe we didn't think of this earlier! Thanks for your replies BB
