Silly question - why do the media keep hyping the fact that everyone gets an A* these days and the exams are dead easy when the cross section of results posted on here look dead normal and comparable with what my mates and I got (21 years ago)! I'm only 37 you know?! I hate the media with their "exams are getting easier". Young people are knocked in the news for being wasters, drop outs etc etc due to stories of violence and bad behaviour yet when there is a positive story - showing young people have worked hard and done well - the media knock their efforts and say it must be because exams are easier Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
ubereglu Posted August 24, 2007 Share Posted August 24, 2007 Interestingly they didn't seem to have said that about GCSE's just A levels, did anyone watch Mock the Week last night? One of the points was about how the media criticise teenagers and they said when they do get the chance to shine, (A levels) they then say they've gotten easier and moan at them for that. What I find interesting is when they make such a big hype of 90% of GCSE students passed Chemistry. A pass is marked as an E. Say 30% of people get an E it's not very good at all. The Chemistry GCSE I did this year was by far the hardest exam I've ever done, despite that I was quite interested to find out that the mark needed for a C was only 15. OUT OF 45! Unfortunately he didn't give back one of his text books so he isn't allowed his results yet. He has to return the book to the teacher first. When will he learn? Guest Posted August 24, 2007 Share Posted August 24, 2007 Well done that school. Ours bows to parent pressure and gives the results out anyway but the rule is books or payment first. When I did my degree I heard that if you hadn't paid your tuition fees they would chase you years later but if you hadn't returned a library book you wouldn't graduate! If the results were worse I bet they wouldn't say it was because the exams were harder. They would just say that the young people weren't working hard enough or that the standard of the schools had gone down. What cheesed me off was I only found out the day he was suppossed to collect them. I asked him what time he had to go and get his results and then he confessed he wasn't allowed to. My son got his chemistry, biology and physics module marks yesterday, but the marks awarded seem different to yours Martin . Marks were out of 40 and he had to get 36 for an A*, 32 for an A, 28 for a B, and so on......... nothing quite as bizarre as 15 out of 45 for a C . He did ok-ish, bearing in mind that he didn't revise, although I was NOT impressed with the F in one of the physics papers. He did well in the others though.
