Organic vs Free Range – what’s the difference?

On this site

https://www.soilassociation.org/organic-living/why-organic/better-for-animals/

they state that

Organic standards mean hens must have access to outside areas. They go further than free range standards in a number of important ways.

"1. Organic standards stipulate smaller flock sizes and lower stocking densities (the number of birds per square metre).

Smaller flock sizes help to ensure healthier and less stressed birds as chickens would naturally live in small groups.

2. Organic farms certified by the Soil Association have to provide more pop holes (exits from the hen house) than 'free range' farms do, to ensure access to pasture is not restricted.

3. All organic birds are fed on GM free feed whereas there are no requirements regarding GM status in free range birds' feed."

Using Amazons 'Look Inside' at the HB book to accompany their Chicken & Egg Series they say

"Organic - Like FR, organic chickens live longer lives and have to have access to the outdoors. The difference is that these birds are fed on an organic diet "

No mention of lower stocking density

They use the same distinction for organic and FR eggs.

So I wonder how 'informed'(right word ?) their series and book are ?

Comments please, H

I was looking forward to the 1st episode, watched it & cancelled the series link. Always enjoyed the HB's previously but found the show boring & childish! Si....is not himself at all....humour was cringe worthy :(

Si had a brain tumour removed a year or so ago...and was 'out of action' for a while. I didn't notice any difference (but I am not always known for my perception and, by the time the prog airs, I am fairly knackered and unresponsive anyway :roll: !) I guess its possible that there are some lasting effects - I don't know much about brain tumours but have heard that there can be personality changes.

Will give it another chance tonight (am cooking blackened chicken for boy's supper this ev  ) but, if the humour (or rather lack of it) continues I don't think I'll be able to stand any more!

Eek, taking foot out of mouth....I didn't know, but yes I can only imagine the impact & that probably explains the loss of .... Sparkle??
