Minnie&Moose
Nearly 5 months on and I've finally moved out 2 of the 3 Shetland hens that were reared by our tiny pekin (she's small for a pekin but just as gobby as the biggest one). Splinty (chick with leg problems) turned out to be male - he's still with us and headed for the freezer soon but in the meantime he and one of his 'sisters' are beginning intros into the 'big' girls pen. He was beginning to try and tread the pekin and given her diminutive size that didn't seem like a good idea. But the remaining chick (who is now the size of a small hybrid POL) is staying with her mum - she's got an amazing crest but can't see out too well so I think would get bullied by the ex batts. The other hatch eventually yielded 5 scots dumpy bantams and 1 pekin. 3 of the dumpies turned out to be male - 1 failed to thrive so was despatched, one is now enjoying life with his own small flock, and we hope to keep the remaining one - at the moment the neighbours claim to be in favour of this - any problems though and he'll be off to the freezer. The pekin and other 2 dumpies are hens so this year we got 5 hens and 4 cockerels - better than last time when it was 2 hens and 5 cockerels!
