Winnie laid an egg

Recommended Posts

We're celebrating Winnie laying an egg. Nothing remarkable you may say, but Winnie is 7 years old in April. Still not that remarkable, but Winnie was brought in last May unable to walk and has been recovering slowly from what first seemed to be a broken foot? Her foot swelled to many times its proper size and then fluid erupted from between her toes and at the back of her foot. Seems she had broken her leg just above the ankle and the resulting swelling had filled her foot. After a week or so she was able to hop; a month or so later and the foot shrank somewhat and a hard lump the size of a marble came out. Then she started moulting, which set her back badly. But the foot continued to shrink and she was able to put some weight on it. Last month her walk was nearly normal and she was allowed out to scratch in a purpose made enclosure.

On Thursday she became rather agitated, so suspecting an egg was coming we gave her a nest box. Two hours and a lot of scratching later and a 54 gramme egg resulted! We're hoping for a repeat today.

Another 54 gramme egg! Winnie is indeed a tough little Wyandotte: well not that little as she's got rather fat with her inactivity. She's actually a rather large (and pretty) brown and blue laced Wyandotte. Further to an earlier post, she crows in the morning as well.
