Luvachicken
So tonight, I went to a local craft club and took my phone, so I could show other people my new Pekin chicks. Most of them said how sweet they were etc, etc. But one lady said quite bluntly that chickens shouldn't be kept in gardens. She boasted how when she was a child she lived somewhere massive and had loads of chickens running around. As an adult she didn't see the point in chickens at all and was most insistent they shouldn't be in a garden. I explained mine are only diddy and she got quite stroppy with me. I admit I don't have the biggest garden in the world but I am happy to share my space with such pretty pets. They are my little bit of the countryside - somewhere I couldn't afford to live - and watching their antics is a great stress reliever. Why can't people just be a bit nicer and just say they wouldn't keep chickens themselves. That's the last time I thread her ends in for her
Hippie Chick
Some folks are determined to be unpleasant no matter what, it seems that getting agitated about anything that provides an opportunity to do so gives them some kind of kick and they love to feel that they know better than you and have had/done better things than you. It's easy to say 'ignore them' but not easy to do it in practice, is it! Anyway, she's not right. A few chickens in a small but well adapted garden will experience more one-to-one time with their owners, have their individual needs met better than in a large flock, have any illnesses or problems spotted quickly... I'm not suggesting that vast amounts of chickens over a huge area aren't well looked after, but the more your attention is divided the less time you can spend with them. And my five hens seemingly love attention from people (much to my neighbour's delight!). Two finger salute to her and next time she wants help tell her it's as pointless as keeping chickens
Luvachicken
Thanks Hippie Chick You are right. I will ask her if she has any pets - surely the same could be said for a rabbit in a run, a budgie in a cage, a hamster even - none of them have the life they would have if they were in the wild do they ? Chickabee
Sounds like Margot from "The Good life" bet she's captain of the operatic society, or something similar
mullethunter
In my experience most people who think that adults can't enjoy hinge because hey should have grown out of them tend to be joyless individuals. I'm sorry you had to interact with such a sourpuss but try not to dwell on it - she's not worth it.
LAB
Huh. I thought backyard chickens was a very common thing on your side of the pond! How much room do people think they need to be happy? A small flock doesn't need any more room then a dog and the dog still needs daily walks. Keeping any pet is going to restrict them. Snakes or fish in an aquarium! Still chickens in a small yard are loved and taken care of. The poor chickens used commercially are the sad ones! Enjoy your babies and let it roll off your back. Have you seen JP Sears skit on how to be offended by anything? I kept thinking of it this whole time!

Luvachicken
Thanks all I knew you would be on my side. I have forgotten all about her. In fact, giving my chicks cuddles and putting them to bed gives me huge satisfaction and always puts a smile on my face Not forgetting my big cuddles for my big girls too
