Daphne
I just need to express my deep, deep sadness and shock for the 61 confirmed dead so far, 30 of them burned to death in their cars. It's about 30 miles from us, across the main route out of this area. The fire is still going, although not as strongly, luckily the weather is kinder today. We have experienced forest fires since we've been here, and everybody knows it could happen at any time, in any rural community, we all take our fire duties very seriously. But I must also express how much I admire the public sector here. The President, the Interior Minister and the Prime Minister were up and out in the area in the middle of the night, hugging people and trying to bring them solace. Then the PM was in the locale, meeting and greeting and the Health Minister was at the hospital assuring everybody of help and support. All the local Town Hall staff are visible, one bank has given 50,000 euro to help the rescue efforts which are still ongoing, and we will have 3 days mourning to express our condolences. Local communities are giving shelter and support, as they are in London after Grenfall Tower. The fire service is second to none, and I feel proud that this small country is coping so well after such an awful tragedy.

soapdragon
Daphne, that's terrible news. We have been out all day so not heard anything of this but can't imagine how awful this was/is.....there just are not words to express it. I share your admiration for the emergency services...all of them everywhere. They do an amazing job in very difficult conditions.
