6 weeks old and in their new cube!

Recommended Posts

What an adventure! It took 3 evenings with DH and 1 afternoon working with the kids to get our cube and WIR operational! We laughed like crazy over the 1 hour to assemble the cube instructions! It took a half hour to unpack the boxes after getting the neighbor to help bring them to the backyard. Its beautiful! We had a bit of a problem. I forgot when measuring that I needed to convert to meters and not yards! So its too big instead of just barely right. We had to move it up onto the patio slab to get it to work. Unfortunately the grass is uneven with the patio and created a substantial gap. I put paving stones to try to fill it, but its just not going to work. I had a bunch of extra pieces from the door conversion, so I pieced them together under the cube. As my 14 yr old said "Now you know what cookies feel like on a cooling rack!" And took this pic of me jammed in there. I have bruises on my elbows, knees and ribs from this bright idea. I'm looking a little manic!

I'll be putting down sand soon so they won't be walking on the grating, but they don't seem to mind. Most of it is flat on the grass.

Here are my babies out in the cube portion while we finished the WIR when my DH got home from work. I had to rig up the opening so they would be safe while we worked.

All finished and ready for sand. We put in 3 50 lb bags and it barely made a dent. I think I'm going to get some delivered to the house! Here is my little Lacey inside the feeder. Silly chick thought she'd dust bathe in it! She is the smallest, but bravest. She likes to explore.

They did great the first night. Only 1 didn't figure out to go in at night. I went out at 4 am to find her sleeping in the corner under the cube. I coaxed her over and put her with the others. Now they all go in at night.

We've had one injury and I have no clue what happened. My son noticed the blood and we found Henrietta with her head bleeding. I'm not sure how she got hurt! We caught her and I got off the blood, but don't see a wound. She is missing her cheek feathers and a little s"Ooops, word censored!"ped on the side of her beak. She is still a little damp from the wet paper towel here. The next day she looked better and the others haven't noticed that she got hurt.

Lots of fun with chicken adventures. They love their new home and are much happier. They are easier to play with and not flighty like they were inside.
